Wire listing.

Dr Eugene Chadbourne
Doc
Chad has a tremendous history: playing with John Zorn in the 70's forming the legendary Shockabilly with Kramer, recording LP's with Camper Van Beethoven and countless others. He's also recorded the most twisted covers of country and western music you could ever wish to hear, and practically invented the Noise genre back in the 80;'s with "The Plunger" and "the Rake". It’s his first visit to the UK in about 15 years and we're as pleased as pigshit to have him aboard.

The last time I saw Eugene Chadbourne was way back in 1989, 31st of March to be precise at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton, just behind the police station. Excellent gig that was, we are so excited to have Eugene play at the Spirit of Gravity. I have told and invited all my friends, even if they are not interested.

I have been singing "Top of the tallest treeee..." for months now.

Chadbourne has worked with numerous artists including John Zorn, Fred Frith, Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, Carla Bley Band, Paul Lovens, Toshinori Kondo, Camper Van Beethoven, Jello Biafra, Turbonegro, They Might Be Giants, Sun City Girls, Violent Femmes, Aki Takase, Walter Daniels, Kevin Blechdom, Biff Blumfumgagnge, Zu and Jimmy Carl Black.

Chadbourne also fronted Shockabilly (1982–1985) with Mark Kramer (bass/organ) and David Licht (drums), releasing four eclectic albums.

Gus Garside, Annie Kerr & Monty Oxymoron
Annie Kerr - Violin (solos and sessions e.g. "The Mona Lisa Curse" Channel 4)
Gus Garside - double bass & electronics (Arc, Dan Powell/Gus Garside)
Monty Oxymoron - percussion (The Damned, Sumerian Kings etc)

Slash’s Wormhole
Henry Collins' psychedelic adventure into sonic abstraction: Home-made instrument's, circuit bent toys & improvised noise. Henry is tidy, Henry likes to use the vacuum cleaner late at night. Slash's Wormhole is Henry's project which features a homemade bass guitar crafted from the body of a Hoover boss loop pedal, circuit-bent keyboards and toys.
From the Spirit of Gravity Jan 2009 - "
God bless Henry Collins, he of Slash's Wormhole. Lover of Polish cinema, farmer’s favourite and man of the world. He arrived on stage with his bass Hoover and mangling boxes and proceeded to give James Murray Spangler & Leo Fender's combined greatest moments a pasting. Like his namesake there was plenty of rock posturing and a certain amount of rolling around on the floor, but the music's the thing pop pickers and whilst not being my Mums idea of music (she likes brass bands), I fucking loved it. How Henry manages to pull what he does from the chaos surrounding him is anyone’s guess, but he manages pretty well".

·                     Reviewings

Spirit of Gravity at the Komedia Studio Bar, Brighton, Thursday 26th August 2010

Circus Toe
Going from a 5 piece to a 2 piece and then turning up with a different drummer to that advertised you could guess that Circus Toe were in a state of flux and it was a pretty fluid set that Reuben and FRED blasted out, Reuben’s electronics had an electronic guitar-ish intensity and Fred kept the drums rocketing all the way through. Highlight of the set may have been Reuben throwing things at him trying to end the set that only encouraged more frenzy. Good and noisy.

Slow Listener
Set up in front of the stage and rocking to some internal beat, Slow Listener unconsciously provided a soundtrack for some lovely footage of a diver dancing with humpbacked whales. It was a brief set of two halves, initially some harsh noise dominated but as his brief set developed they faded out to be replaced by an intricately grained wash that gelled perfectly with the unseen images behind him.

Clang Sayne
A four piece from a variety of places with Frances flying in especially from Ireland for the event and old favourite James O'Sullivan on guitar, Clang Sayne come over as some abstract sea-shantied Tom Waits led by an Irish Julie Tippets (if you must have genre definitions), with an improvised set based around a set of lyrics sung by Frances, a double bass and drums providing a good 20 foot swell of ebb and flow accompanied by her own free guitar picking and James' seabird hawks. It was a remarkable set that did leave me feeling faintly seasick.

$un$hine Republic
It was the first time $un$hine Republic had played for several years, and they seemed to be really enjoying themselves. There was a drummer (making it the third drummer of the evening, surely a SoG record) a singer hiding away at the back on the other side, and seated at the front, two guitarists, each with a varied array of effects and other devices. The drums provide a locked groove for the guitars to roar over and they do. With vocals distorted and providing texture, the rhythm changes for the second piece and it ends with Gish chewing on and shouting into his guitar. Providing a proper bookend to a good varied evening.

Yours as ever
